dc.description.abstract This thesis is a collection of fifteen short stories that investigate the working class experience in a fictional Ontario setting, while also experimenting with the short story form. Each is narrated from a different first-person perspective, ranging from a seven-year-old boy to an elderly widower, a teenage runaway to a middle-aged gay man, a developmentally delayed adult to an anxious wreck of a twenty-something. Characters earn livings through temp agencies and blue collar jobs, and live in townhouses, co-ops, trailers. They come from complicated family structures and situations that leave them ever-grappling with the idea of greener pastures. The result is a collection that not only paints a vivid portrait of this world and the people who inhabit it, but stories where characters find the ability to transcend the limitations either imposed upon them, or which they’ve imposed upon themselves. en_US
