Author: Daly, Lauren; Fredericks, Kaitlin; Orr, Christopher; Stanivuk, Ela; Todd, Joshua
Abstract: Grand Valley Institution (GVI) is a federal correctional facility that is specifically designed for female offenders. As a federal facility, it houses women who have received sentences for crimes over two years in length. It is not specific to one security level, and has programs and housing for minimum to maximum security. For the purposes of this review, the focus will be on residential or communal living, and as such will disregard the maximum-security quarters of GVI.The purpose of this research is to provide Grand Valley Institution with a comprehensive review of the academic literature as it relates to communal living and its subsequent challenges.
