Abstract

Held on October 25, 2013, the Open Access Colloquium: Redefining Impact was the inaugural colloquium event for the Research Enterprise and Scholarly Communication Team, a unit based out of the Library at the University of Guelph. Especially for a first time event, the colloquium was a great success pulling together over 80 University of Guelph administrative leaders, faculty, students, staff, librarians and regional colleagues. The goal was to provide an inspirational and collaborative opportunity to learn, discuss, and celebrate the new imperative to scholarly communication, open access. In addition to being well attended, the colloquium was well received. Many attendees expressed positive feedback about the relevance and quality of the speakers and their presentations. Rebecca Graham, CIO and Chief Librarian opened the day with a welcoming message. Of note were the three keynote speakers: Leslie Chan, Chad Gaffield and Michael Geist. Six short lightning talk presentations were delivered by faculty who submitted interesting and related ideas about open access, Open Humanities, Open Data, Open Science, Community Engagement, and Intellectual property rights management. The day was closed by Catherine Steeves, who summed up the day by weaving together the themes and messages heard throughout the day. The following pages contain specific information and feedback about the colloquium.
