Food for Health

Today's consumers are more interested in food and nutrition than ever before. OMAFRA and the University of Guelph's research into consumer trends, and food production and formulation has the potential to improve the health of Ontarians. It also provides competitive opportunities for producers and agri-food companies. The Ontario Agri-Food Innovation Alliance is committed to supporting research to provide consumers with functional foods — foods that have been shown to have health benefits, such as reducing heart disease and the incidence of diabetes. The scope of this research theme is large and complex, but the social and economic benefits can be enormous. Consumers' purchasing decisions, dietary patterns and increased knowledge about the relationship between food and health will drive this research theme forward.
