Abstract: The novel Yours to Keep tells the story of Jane, a Canadian woman from Toronto, who moves to Barcelona, suffers a sudden loss in her personal life, and temporarily becomes a thief. Working alongside a pick-pocket from Ecuador, Jane often follows the people they’ve robbed to observe the ways they deal with their physical losses. The characters she encounters while living on the street include Sub-Saharan prostitutes, Senegalese purse-sellers, Catalan graffiti artists, Freegan squatters, backpacking buskers, and Pakistani beer-sellers. All of these characters are outsiders in some sense, and living amongst them for a time prompts Jane to consider the lucky versus the unlucky and the illusion of possession. By the time she is arrested and deported at the end of the book, she has acquired a new acceptance of the transience of all things, and an expanded understanding of her position in the world.
