Science Made Simple - Support for Elementary School Science Teachers

Provincial curriculum guidelines recommend hands-on, experimental science education in elementary schools. However teachers face a number of challenges in introducing such activities in their classrooms. To address some of these challenges "Science made Simple", a one-day program for elementary school teachers, was initiated by Education Programs staff at Research In Motion. The program brought together a number of organizations which provide science and engineering outreach: CWSE-ON, the Perimeter Institute, Engineering Science Quest and Scientists in the Schools. Interactive sessions provided a number of examples of simple, low-cost activities and opportunities for the participants to experiment.

CWSE-ON staff developed a complete science unit tied directly to energy (Grades 5 & 6 science curriculum). The unit includes background information, instructions and materials for a hands-on design activity, as well as multiple learning worksheets. The design activity illustrates basic concepts in science and introduces skills such as teamwork, persistence through failure and communication. Previous evaluation has shown that the design activity has been successful in engaging female students and in dispelling stereotypes about engineering.

The collection includes: a presentation for ICWES 15 (Adelaide Australia, July 2011) and the CWSE-ON science unit related to energy.
