Effect of One Cup and Half Cup of Canned Beans in Multiple Varieties for 28 Days on Fasting Glycemic Measures in Hypercholesterolemic Adults Without Diabetes: A Randomized Controlled Trial

Abstract

Type 2 diabetes is a highly prevalent chronic disease that can be prevented and managed in part with lifestyle modifications including diet. Beans are nutrient-dense and have a low glycemic index; however, the effect of daily consumption of canned beans on fasting glycemic measures is not well studied. This study used a multi-centred, randomized, crossover study design to examine the effects of 28 days consumption of one cup (OCB) and half cup (HCB) of canned beans (black, navy, pinto, dark red kidney, white kidney) compared to white rice (WR) on fasting glycemic measures in 73 hypercholesterolemic adults without diabetes. Results showed that fasting serum glucose, serum insulin and insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) was not significantly different between the OCB, HCB and WR treatments. These results suggest that canned beans of multiple varieties do not affect fasting glycemic measures in adults without diabetes; however, their effects in adults with diabetes warrants research.
