dc.description.abstract An improved flux gradient technique was developed for the measurement of total gaseous mercury fluxes. Preliminary tests indicate that the method can resolve concentration differences on the order of 0.01 ng/m 3. Method components were rigorously tested for acceptability under field and laboratory conditions. Apparatus was chosen to minimize sorption effects. Air samples were pre-dried using Nafion® dryers, excluding the need for water vapour flux corrections. The technique was successfully used to measure fluxes at two background sites in the summer of 2000. At Klages, Ontario measurements were taken in a grassy field overlying mercuriferous shale bedrock. The average flux was 2.9 ± 1.7 ng/m2.h (emission to the atmosphere). At Rouyn-Noranda, Quebec an average flux of 5.1 ± 0.7 ng/m2.h was measured over sand and gravel. Field data indicates that the air-surface exchange of mercury is controlled by several environmental variables, including temperature, humidity, wind speed, substrate concentration and soil moisture.
