Abstract

This report summarizes the results of the processing tomato variety trials during the 1995 season. The main emphasis of this work has been to identify and recommend processing tomato cultivars suited for wholepack use in Ontario. The trials were conducted on a variety of soil types, and in a number of different growing areas in order to provide information on adaptability of cultivars over the entire growing area, as well as to provide some information as to which varieties may be best suited for specific tomato production areas in Ontario. Field performance tells only half the story on the merits of a particular cultivar. Evaluations on handling and processing characteristics are also conducted to provide information to the processing companies. There have been a few changes in this year’s report. The method for measuring firmness (cracking) has changed, and the actual maturity ranking values are reported in another appendix at the back.
