Abstract

"Intruder" consists of individual poems broken into three sections. Themes of intrusion and encroachment recur as the poems touch on such subjects as migration and xenophobia, urban sprawl, and disease. My cancer diagnosis and two and a half years of chemotherapy are not explicitly mentioned, but are alluded to throughout. The tone of the speaking voice ranges from droll to demagogic. The manuscript's three sections also correspond to phases in my writing. The first section, consisting mostly of plainspoken poems about city life, is influenced by the poems of James Schuyler and Karen Solie, among others. The second, consisting of sixteen-line poems that progress through associative logic, takes its cue from books like John Ashbery's Shadow Train and Ben Lerner's The Lichtenberg Figures. The poems in the third section are slower and more spaced out, inspired by the work of Rae Armantrout and Fanny Howe.
