Abstract: The Sea Lamprey (Petromyzon marinus) is invasive in the Laurentian Great Lakes and the target of a binational control program. Trapping could be a valuable control method, but its efficiency in large rivers is too low for control purposes, possibly because trapping is biased toward certain behavioural types. Understanding consistent individual differences in behaviour could benefit the management of invasive species. This study determined if individual differences in time to enter a novel environment (risk-taking) and proportion of time moving (activity), measured in standardized laboratory tests, were correlated to the time to encounter a trap and captured in a trap, measured in laboratory tests and in the St. Marys River. Individuals were tagged electronically, assessed for behaviour, and released in the river. Trap encounters and captures were quantified using video, tag antennas, and trap checks. In the laboratory, Sea Lamprey differed consistently in risk-taking and activity, with more active individuals entering traps sooner than less active individuals. In the field, the times to trap encounter and capture were not correlated to risk-taking and activity. This study provides a unique, management-scale evaluation that the effect of individual differences in behaviour on trapping efficiency, but provides no evidence that trapping of Sea Lamprey in the St. Marys River is biased towards individuals differing in risk-taking and activity.
