Abstract: Concern for rural communities has been growing, as many communities are faced with declining populations, economic hardship and changing demographics. As these trends become more widespread, strategies for revitalization become of increasing importance. Detroit, Michigan has experienced many of the trends facing rural Ontario, and has developed a long-term, comprehensive framework to address these concerns. This paper aims to provide lessons and recommendations guiding rural communities in revitalization efforts. These lessons take into account the strengths and weaknesses of rural communities, and offer direction for rural communities facing an uncertain future.
