dc.description.abstract Water quality constitutes an important component of the Grand River Basin Water Management Study. The key elements of water quality investigation are: 1. to determine existing water quality conditions and relate them to various water uses; 2. to identify the type, magnitude, relative significance and impact of pollutants from point and nonpoint (urban and rural) sources on the water quality of the river; and 3. to develop water quality management programs to preserve areas of high water quality and to upgrade areas where poorer water quality exists. Agricultural runoff has been recognized as a potential major contributor of polluting materials to the Grand River. Therefore, investigation of pollution from rural sources became an integral part of the basin's water quality assessment program. The objectives of this study are: 1. to investigate how natural land forms, agricultural land use, and agricultural land management practices affect the loadings of suspended solids, total phosphorus, filtered reactive phosphorus, total Kjeldahl nitrogen and filtered nitrite and nitrate to the Grand River; 2. to project rural non-point source pollutant loads to the years 2001 and 2031 under various land use scenarios; 3. to identify remedial measures that can be used to reduce rural non-point source pollutant loads; and 4. to evaluate the costs and effectiveness of the remedial measures identified.
