Abstract

The CURB (Clean Up Rural Beaches) Plan is a report which outlines the specific remedial projects required to improve water quality at the Hay and Dedrich Creek watersheds. In recent years, water pollution from rural land management practices has led to water quality impairment at reservoir areas resulting in beach closures. Water quality in reservoirs of Hay and Dedrich Creek watersheds has been poor for the past few years. In 1990, the beach was placarded at the Backus Heritage Conservation Area for most of the summer and a major fish kill occurred at the Hay Creek Conservation Area. The CURB plan is a result of a two year study which began in June 1990 in cooperation with the Ontario Ministry of the Environment. It is based on farm interviews and questionnaires, water quality data, stream surveys, and field assessments. The result of the CURB study is a remedial action plan designed to reduce the impact of agricultural practices on water quality of Hay and Dedrich Creek. The remedial action plan is specific to each reservoir impacted by these streams and is designed for long term upgrading and protection of recreational water quality.
