Title: Ausable Bayfield Conservation Authority, CURB Program annual report
Author: Hocking, Doug
Abstract: This is the fourth summary report of the Ausable Bayfield Conservation Authority (ABCA) Clean Up Rural Beaches (CURB) Program. It summarizes surface water quality improvement projects undertaken by watershed residents. Surface water quality data collected during April to March 1994-1995 is presented. Two special projects were undertaken, to test a Waterloo biofilter unit and perform a small septage spreading experiment on a tiled field. Drain water samples were collected to monitor discharges from CURB-funded drains installed in two lakeshore subdivisions at the end of 1993. Since September 1, 1991 the entire ABCA watershed measuring 2442 km2 has been eligible for CURB funding to assist residents to eliminate contamination of surface drains and watercourses discharging to Lake Huron. There are 60 km of Lake Huron shoreline within the ABCA jurisdiction with numerous public and private beaches. Major public beaches are located at the Ipperwash and Pinery Provincial Parks, the villages of Bayfield, Grand Bend and Port Franks and the Port Blake Conservation Area. Surface water quality monitoring continued at previously established sites in the Bayfield River, Parkhill Creek and Ausable River watersheds. Beaches data was provided by Lambton and Huron Health Units as well as Pinery Park staff. Where possible, previous years' data has been assembled and presented in this report for perspective. Total cost to eliminate all sources of bacterial contamination delivered to ABCA watercourses (and eventually Lake Huron) was estimated to exceed $41 million in 1989.
