Title: What Remains
Author: Dalton, Simone Patrice Makeba
Department: School of English and Theatre Studies
Program: Creative Writing
Advisor: Brand, Dionne
Abstract: What remains when we lose the person that once tethered us to our identity, or who we thought ourselves to be? Part memoir, part meditation, What Remains is a daughter’s investigation of a collection of memories, events, and letters that remain after her mother’s sudden death. Her once absent father is also among the remains. She begins the process of mending their relationship by discovering who he is and who he is not. In a non-linear structure, this work of creative non-fiction apprehends themes of grief, sense of belonging and place, race, class, and inherited histories.
