Abstract: Crystalline bedrock aquifers serve as a significant source of water in many communities throughout Ontario and internationally. In such environments, discrete fracture pathways and their interconnections have a critical influence on flow. Rapid groundwater velocities can render crystalline bedrock aquifers particularly vulnerable to contamination. In order to continually improve the current understanding of flow and transport in these environments, developing and improving fracture system characterization techniques is an important area of research. This study examines the installation of flexible, impermeable FLUTe™ liners as a means for assessing cross-hole fracture connectivity. FLUTe™ liners are used to generate a new style of hydraulic pulse into the aquifer, with pressure response monitored in a nearby network of open boreholes. Preliminary testing reveals the potential for this method to be used in conjunction with other currently employed borehole liner applications to identify significant groundwater flow paths and estimate inter-well transmissivity.
