Abstract

This thesis is an investigation of the sentience of non-human animals as discovered by my hero, Veena through her journey. The Sheep (former title As I Lie In Bed) is a semi-autobiographical play set in Birmingham (U.K.) where I lived when I was a teen in the 1980s. The story began as an exploration of the terribly turbulent relationship I had with my mother before her premature passing when I became a vegetarian after encountering a sheep that had escaped from a Halal abattoir. My thesis play also investigates the parallels between the socialization of South Asian girls (not exclusively) and animal husbandry; we are trained to become obedient and docile, pushed to marry young, after which we are mercilessly husbanded. I am much like the sheep I met, except that I got away.
