This thesis is a work of fiction and represents the first third of a full length novel. Dawn, the young protagonist, has just moved with her father to the small town of Vienna, Ontario. This is her last year in high school, and she has been assigned a project in which she must investigate the history of her new surroundings. Her entanglement both with these histories and with her physical present--her new relationships in Vienna--brings to the fore complicated elements of her past. A novel about memory and place, ' The Sleepers' explores the way in which history is encoded upon cultural and geographic landscapes. It also examines two figures of marginal yet particular relevance to Canadian history--Thomas Edison and Walt Whitman.
