Abstract

Wavelength-dispersive spectroscopy was used to obtain the portion of the K X-ray spectra that contained multiple ionization satellites of chlorine, potassium, calcium, titanium and chromium bombarded by alpha particles of energies 3, 4 and 5 MeV. Intense satellites near the diagram line are observed and potential causes are explained. The results differed from the values in an interim database. This second step of database refinement permits the construction of a new database to improve the accuracy of PIXE analysis using alpha particle beams. An iterative method for correcting the detector non-linearity is presented and potential dependencies of the effect are examined using spectra obtained by the alpha particle X-ray spectrometer onboard the Curiosity rover.
