Abstract

This thesis investigates the relationship between stagings of cultural memory and the construction of Canadian Latino/a identity. Closely examining stagings of Latino/a cultural memory, looking for interventions and revisions, erasures, and continuities, I investigate the significance of memory to contemporary Canadian Latino/a identity and consider how that identity---as constituted by theatrical (re)productions---is positioned in terms of gender, race, class, and other social markers. Examining the material conditions of production and reception of the stagings allows me to more fully consider the performative work these stagings do and to understand how contemporary Canadian latinidad negotiates culturally dominant histories and narratives.
