Osteosarcoma of the appendicular skeleton is the most common primary bone tumour in dogs. To address the unmet need for a biomarker in canine OSA that is reliable and non-invasive, we began investigating the prognostic value of various hematological measures through a retrospective study. We discovered that an elevated pre-amputation neutrophil count is significantly associated with a poor disease-free interval and overall survival time. Next, we aimed to further investigate the tumour-associated neutrophil population in canine primary tumours. Using tissue microarray technology and myeloperoxidase as a neutrophil marker, we observed a positive correlation between tumour infiltrating neutrophil quantities and circulating neutrophil counts. These findings suggest circulating neutrophil counts hold prognostic value in OSA disease progression, and that blood measures can provide insight onto what is happening within the tumour microenvironment directly. Additional studies are warranted to verify these findings and confirm the prognostic value of neutrophils in canine OSA disease progression.en_US
