This thesis is an investigation of the economic impacts of agricultural exports in Huron County. The thesis utilizes analytical techniques associated with economic base theory to gain a clearer understanding of how agriculture and the agri-export industry contributes to the local economy in terms of generating income and providing employment opportunities. The research focuses on a select group of major agricultural exporters (37 businesses) and reveals that the agri-export industry makes a significant contribution to the local economy, generating $330 million worth of export sales and supporting over 1,000 full-time equivalent jobs. A further feature of the local agri-related business sector is its substantial capacity to serve the needs of neighbouring agricultural regions. It is conceivable that the concentration of farms and agri-related businesses in the county is producing agglomeration benefits for the region. In the process of developing economic development strategies, local planners and policymakers should be attentive to the overall benefits and opportunities that are afforded by agriculture and the agri-export industry.en_US
