This thesis takes the form of a literary novel set in two distinct periods that thematically and contextually connect Toronto across time: December 1944, when the city saw its worst winter storm in history, and December 2013 when the ice storm that paralyzed the city froze everything, even time, it seemed. This work explores ways in which people are dis/connected to, and from, each other, how place links our stories whether we know it or not, and what happens in relationships when hearts freeze or begin to thaw. The novel follows a real estate agent and an aspiring photographer who are each drawn into an unsolved murder involving two women - an employee at the fictional Armstrong Brickwork Company and the owner's daughter. As one protagonist becomes an amateur detective the other is unwittingly aiding a ghost (and himself) in getting back home. This work plays with counter-realist impulses, and therefore crosses genre.
