Abstract
From babymoons to fertility treatment, reproduction tourism has slowly become an important niche in the tourism industry. Many foreign markets have deregulated much of their medical industry allowing them to capitalize on the increasing number of tourists participating in fertility treatment. Tourists are also benefiting from this deregulation as medical treatments and stress-free vacations are becoming more readily available at cheaper prices. Both consumerism and increased use of technology have played an extremely important role on the growth of this trend in that they encourage tourists to commodify the childbearing experience as well as provide tourists with a wealth of knowledge before the actual purchase decision occurs. This paper will discuss the history of the trend, both positive and negative aspects of the trend, as well as the trend’s future outlook.
