Abstract

Not About Love is a poetic memoir about a woman coming through an abusive relationship with an alcoholic. Using a mixed mode of narrative prose, free verse lyric poetry and song, it is a personal exploration of issues of addiction, mental health and violence against women within the dangerous construct of co-dependent love. It is a portrait of loss, disembodiment, and the work to reconnect to oneself, acknowledging that that reconnection is a complicated and always ongoing part of that recovery. Implementing a choral framework of women’s voices, ranging from the song lyrics of female musicians to letters from female friends, it uses popular music as a reference point for connection and storytelling.
