Abstract

This thesis is an investigation of the nature of scientific explanation in ecology. It argues that the semantic conception of scientific theories correctly describes scientific explanation in biology. Three problems concerning explanation in theoretical ecology are then shown to be resolvable by adopting the semantic conception of theories.
