Abstract

In past research it was found that adult retail stores had the potential to play a sexual health role, although this role may be minimal and dependent upon customers' willingness to accept the stores as such. The objective of the present study was to explore the characteristics and perceptions of women who visit adult retail stores. A cross-sectional exploratory survey was conducted using a convenience sample of 57 women who visited 14 adult retail stores. The mean age of the women was 30 years ('SD' = 10.23) and the majority indicated they thought adult retail store employees should be trained in most areas of sexual health. The majority (69.5%) of women were willing to recommend an adult retail store as a place to learn about female desire, arousal, pleasure and satisfaction, but participants were less willing (32.4%) to recommend an adult retail store as a sexual health resource.
