Isadora is a novel which explores disconnection and empathy in contemporary society. The novel uses magic realism to create space for the central character, Isadora, to experience the memories of other people. The novel is also a bildungsroman, following three formative periods of Isadora as she becomes a ballet dancer. The first section is set in Colombia and introduces the magical component: her body is fractured during a confrontation with a mythic creature from Latinx folklore. This fracturing continues to haunt her in the subsequent sections where she auditions to a ballet school in Canada and, later, dances as lead ballerina in a production of Giselle. Isadora is not a direct comment on emigration to Canada; however, migrancy is an irrevocable influence on Isadora’s life. This book is the corner of a trilogy that will also encompass the stories of Isadora’s father and brother.
