Abstract

This thesis is a linked short story collection, which explores themes of cultural identity and exile within a Japanese-Canadian family. The stories focus on three characters: a father, a mother and a daughter, and they are told in first person, from the different characters’ points of view, at various times in their lives. The collection includes narratives such as the father’s past as a high school baseball player in Japan, the mother’s connection with Sakhalin Island and the teenage daughter’s experience working with her father in a fish factory. My intention was to convey the simultaneity, contradiction and space between events and to present the polyphony of these characters’ voices, so that the complexity of this family unit could be revealed.
