Control of volunteer adzuki bean (Vigna angularis (Willd.) OHWI & OHASHI) in corn (Zea mays) and soybean (glycine max)

dc.description.abstractThirty-two field experiments were conducted over a four-year period (2005-2007, 2009) at two Ontario locations to evaluate the efficacy of pre-emergence (PRE) and post-emergence (POST) herbicides for the control of volunteer adzuki bean in corn and soybeans. Dicamba/atrazine applied POST in corn consistently provided greater than 95% control of volunteer adzuki bean and reduced density, biomass, and seed production to the equivalent of the weed-free check. All other POST herbicides provided variable control in corn. All PRE corn herbicides failed to provide consistently adequate volunteer adzuki bean control. At the time of the POST application in corn, 67% of the volunteer adzuki bean population had emerged. Chlorimuron-ethyl and glyphosate applied POST in soybean resulted in up to 84 and 94% control 8 WAA, respectively. Chlorimuron-ethyl and glyphosate also decreased adzuki bean density, biomass, and seed production and successfully reduced soybean contamination with adzuki bean seed under 1%. All other POST and PRE herbicides evaluated did not adequately control volunteer adzuki bean. At the time of the POST application in soybean, 94% of the volunteer adzuki bean population had emerged.en_US
